STA. BARBARA, Pangasinan – The third day of the 1st Pangasinan Umaani Expo recently dubbed Agew na Umaanid Tanaman showcased the ‘sangka’ contests which recognized best entries in their superlative degree of classifications.
Simultaneous with the sangka or pinaka contests held at the province’s Agricultural Center in Tebagf, Sta. Barbara was the opening program graced by Sta. Barbara Mayor Carlito Zaplan, on behalf of 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr., who thanked high value crops and corn farmers for their active participation in the Umaani expo.
Extolling them for their sacrifices in leveling up the high value crops and corn yields of the province, Mayor Zaplan assured that the town of Sta. Barbara, being home to the province’s Agricultural Center, is keen on upgrading its capabilities on agricultural production.
Meanwhile, OIC Provincial Agriculturist Dalisay Moya bared that the sangka contests added spice to the Umaani expo as more agricultural stakeholders from various parts of the province engaged themselves, bringing their sangka entries for the competition.
High Value Crops Development Program Coordinator Violeta Laforteza said the winners of the sangka contests received cash prizes and certificates of recognition.
Winners in sangka- balegan tan sangka-dukeyan contests are: sangka-balegan ya mangga (Belen Noble – Cabalitian, Sual), sangkabalegan ya apayas (Ma. Bugarin – Caturay Norte, Mangatarem), sangkabalegan ya langka (Virginia Castro – San Carlos City), sangka-dokeyan ya seba (Eduardo), sangkabalegan yan pakwan (Rodolfo Orcilla – Pangascasan, Sual).
For high value crops, winners in contests are: sangkadukeyan ya talon (Jesus Quindara – Piaz, Villasis), sangkabalegan ya kamatis (Roger Caigas – Sta. Maria, Alaminos City), sangkadukeyan ya playa (Erlinda Garcia – Sta. Maria, Alaminos City), sangkadukeyan ya agayep (Violeta Parida – Caroselan, Umingan), sangkadukeyan ya patola (Federico Olivar, Villasis), sangkadukeyan ya kalabasa (Delia Pastor – Laoag, Aguilar), sangkabalegan ya kamoteng kahoy (Alfredo Honrado – Calasiao), sangkabalegan ya ube (Ricardo Tandoc – Calasiao), sangkabalegan ya ambalanga ya sibuyas (Cornelio Damaso, Jr – Natividad), sangkabalegan ya amputin sibuyas (Andres Bactad – Bautista), sangkabalegan ya agat (Norberto Danzil), sangkabalegan ya duyaw ya mais (Elisa Liwanag – San Carlos City).
Sta. Maria’s winning team in the sangka-samitan ya pinakbet cooking contest is composed of Joey Laurencio, Rolando Albino, George Parinas; coach, Beverly Penticostes, High Value Crops Municipal Coordinator.
For sangka- pelesan yan mangan, winners are: sangka-pelesan ya mangan maetan manga (Arnel Supnit – Mangaldan), sangka-pelesan ya mangay sibuyas (Jake Liteme), sangka-pelesan ya mangay ansakket ya mais (Dennis Balcita, San Nicolas), and sangkapelesan ya mangay silin labuyo (Ruth Prado – San Fabian).
In 3.17 minutes, Arnel Supnit won the sangka-pelesan ya manubak tan manboksil na mais contest.
High value crops and corn farmers actively participated in the Good Agricultural Practices and Consultation Forum and the Corn Program Assessment and Consultation Dialogue held in the afternoon.
The Agew na Umaanid Tanaman also featured the folk media competition.
