BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Division Disasters Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Team of the Department of Education headed by the division coordinator Mr. Karim L. Javar spearhead the training and conduct of the first ever DRRM Olympics on September 16, 2017 at Manuel L. Quezon Open ground. The Olympic was just right after a rigid of training the previous months and various cancellation of activities brought by the unfavorable weather conditions.
The said Olympics is in cognizance of the National Disasters Preparedness Month of July theme “4Ks: Kamalayan sa Kahandaan, Katumbas ay Kaligtasan.” This first DRRM Olympic sought to involve the whole division family or stakeholders towards wholesome awareness at all levels in promoting a safe working and learning environment; increase learner’s knowledge on preparedness, prevention and mitigation during emergency, generating the highest level of awareness, consciousness, promote camaraderie and importance of team working in DRRM programs.
The Department of Education division personnel, students, and teachers, parents in the elementary and secondary had first their trainings on July 17 – July 26, 2017, and scheduled by batches. The different contested skills involves fire safety skills and first aid competition which was participated by adult/teachers, junior high, senior high, and elementary categories, while the DRRM quiz bee and short film contest is schedules for the month of October.
The participants involves students, parents and teachers and they are all trained in dealing with emergencies such as rescue operations, fire safety, and first aid in times of real dangers.
The conduct of the DRRM training and Olympics is in coordination with the Baguio Emergency and Medical Service Staff (BCEMS) and, the Baguio City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
