BAGUIO CITY – ROC-A sacked Filambri, 74-73, in their match up last Wednesday, September 20, 2017 to what was seeminingly a grudge match between the two ball clubs while BENECO Voltz denied St. Andrews, 82-72, during the elimination round of the YMCA Cup.
Filambri was confident of repeating their opening day win against ROC-A as they meet for the second round of the eliminations. ROC-A gave them a close battle this time around.
Filambri opened the first canto of play with a 22-16 blast to boost their confidence level in winning the game. ROC’s Paolo Almazora, Rene Laguit, and Ahmed Alshati, who is returning back from injury, however, showed persistence in the second canto to outscore Filambri, 30-22, and take a two-point lead, 46-44, going to the third.
Filambri’s Olan Poyaoan exerted more effort to carry his team back to the lead to no avail as a slow paced third canto saw both ball clubs intensifying their defense strategies that got them in a scoring deadlock at 11-all, and not changing the situation as ROC-A hanged on in the front seat, 57-55
Fourth canto action further intensified as both teams wanted control of the game. A see-saw game ensued until the dying seconds of the quarter with ROC-A still leading by one point 74-73.
Filambri, however, would get three chances of winning the game but missed all attempts in the dying seconds to be in the tale as losers by a point.
Meanwhile, the BENECO Voltz roared to a boosin recording their first win against three losses in their match up with Saint Andrews, recording a 26-17 first canto run. The Voltz carried on their lead throughout the game the end of the fourth quarter buzzer with help from Jhonny Pascua and Arvin Gamboa’s efforts.
