San Fernando tech-youth group win at international robotics olympiad

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – Seven students from the People’s City, who proudly represented the Philippines, garnered 2nd runner-up under the ‘Humanoid Free Fighting Category’ during the 2018 International Robotics Olympiad held in Hong Kong Science Park last July 19-23, 2018.
The International Robotics Olympiad was participated by over 800 students from Shanghai, Malaysia, Philippines, Liaoning, Thailand, Macau, and Hong Kong. It was organized by Dr. Kittiporn Inthasida, the Chairman of ASEAN EIS Association.

During their courtesy visit at the Office of the City Mayor recently, Mayor Dong Gualberto congratulated the students, who were from Lorma Colleges-High School.

The tech-savvy-bot-loving team is composed of Grade 8 Students Shania Ashi Gloria; Duane Mathew Chan; Grade 9 Students Jozef Louis Vergara; Glenn Army Zabdiel Reyes; Allen Tulali; and Grade 11 Students Marcial Higoy, Jr. and Shan Rovique Miru Nillo. Aside from the remarkable students, their supportive coaches, Meynard Agpoon and Christian Rence Catbagan were also present.
During a conversation with Manong Dong, Coach Catbagan said “There is no monetary prize for the competition, but the honor of representing the Philippines and the school is a great reward for us.” The winning robot was named “Bembot” originated from its unique fighting skills which is “kumi-kembot.”
The robotics competition was sponsored by the Hong Kong Science Park along with the University of Hong Kong – Faculty of Engineering and VTC STEM Center.
