BAGUIO CITY – The Saint Louis University-Laboratory High School Girls (SLU-LHS) got their second chance to get the number two slot for the finals and earn the right for the championship by hacking out a 41-39 win over University of the Cordilleras Grade School High School (UCGSHS) for a slot in the finals last January 22 at the YMCA Gym, here.
A good game seems to be in store for the SLU blue shirts as they outscored the UC green shirts, who had a hard time on the hoops from the start of the first canto of play, for a four point lead 9-5 at the end of the first canto buzzer.
Taking it as an advantage, the SLULHS girls continued to pour on points despite UCGSHS defense in the second canto, finishing the first half of the game with a 24-17 lead over the green shirts.
The third quarter action was no more than an advantage for SLULHS girls as they outrun the UCGSHS defences to post an 11-8 run to add their lead by ten points that made the UCGSHS defense as well as offense strategies collapse. It was 35-25 end the third canto.
A slow fourth canto play ensued with the SLU posting a 6-3 run for the that will give them another chance for a slot in the finals. They will go win over the UCGSHS for their second time in the two-to-beat mode of play for the semifinal round on January 28, 2017.
The top two teams for the Girls Division in the elimination round, namely: Baguio City High School and University of the Cordilleras Grade School High School teams, have the advantage of a two-to beat situation in the semifinals following the 1 Vs. 4, 2 Vs. 3, cross-over system. The top two teams shall vie for the championship while top 2 and 3 teams will vie for the third and fourth place.
In the other semifinal girls game , Baguio City High School girls won over Berkeley, 49-26, propelling them to the number one position in the finals.
Meanwhile, the final games for the YMCA CUP Inter-School basketball tilt is scheduled on January 29, 2017 with the following games; battle for third place will be played at 8:00 am with the following teams; UCGS Vs. BERKELEY WAVE for elementary division, BERKELY GIRLS Vs. Winner of SLU and UC rematch for High School girls, BCHS Vs. UCGSHS boys, cluster “A” and YMCA Basketball Club Vs. SLAH for boys cluster “B”.
Championship games will be played starting 1:00 pm. with the BERKELEY FACING LUCBAN A, for elementary division, BCHS Vs. Winner of SLU and UC rematch, BERKELEY PAS. Vs. SLU-LHS Boys, cluster A, and BERKELEY B Vs. OLMCM for high school boys cluster B. Awarding of winners will follow after the last game of the day.
