In celebrating the 2nd year of High-Value Crop (HVC) Week, the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) through the High-Value Crop Development Program (HVCDP) conducted a Package on Technology (POT) Training cum Good Agricultural Practices on Upland Vegetables at H100, Ecolodge, Magsaysay Ave, Baguio City on April 11-13, 2022.
Aside from increasing the numbers of GAP practitioners and covering wider farming communities, the activity also aims to impart and enhance new knowledge, skills, and understanding on GAP to upland vegetable growers.
This was participated by about 25 different HVC growers from Baguio City and Benguet. Also, in attendance is the newly elected Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Council (RAFC)-CAR Chairman Ryan Palunan along with his co-regional winners in 2021 Kabataang Agribiz, namely, Nick Loque, Denver Biang, and Aaron Mayao.
“At the end of the training, we are hoping that our participants especially our young farmers will be encouraged to apply GAP on their farm,” said Ms. Remedios Lawingan, Agriculturist II.
This will be a 3-day training that will cover the discussion on the Philippine National Standards (PNS): Code of GAP for Fruits and Vegetables.ย Topics on food safety, farm layout and farm procedure tips as well as guidelines in GAP certification will also be tackled by HVCDP staff.
โThis kind of training will not only raise the awareness of the farmers but our consumers too. This will help ensure that food safety is being implemented especially now that health is a major concern. I hope training like this will continue and be promoted more,โ said Ms. Veronica B. Mat-an, one of the participants from Bakakeng Central, Baguio City.
Moreover, Ms. Rowena Billig from Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) will be discussing the judicious use of agrochemicals and itโs proper handling.
Being able to respond promptly during medical emergencies in the farm may save someone’s life. Hence, basic first aid is also part of the training to be demonstrated by Mr. Jakemar Pangisban and Joshua Ingosan from Red Cross Baguio-Benguet Chapter.ย
Distribution of seeds and IEC materials are also being conducted at the DA-CAR Office in BPI Compound, Guisad, Baguio City.
