TABUK CITY, Kalinga – Following the celebration of World Leprosy Day, the City Health Services Office (CHSO) on January 27 reported one case of leprosy disease in Tabuk this year.
According to Nurse IV Delma Gulingan, from the CHSO, the reported individual is a 35-year-old male and single from Tabuk City.
The health office noted that leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria, Mycobacterium leprae.
The disease predominantly affects the skin and peripheral nerves. If the disease is left untreated, it may cause progressive and permanent disabilities.
The bacteria are transmitted via droplets from the nose and mouth during close and frequent contact with untreated cases.
Gulingan added that leprosy is curable with multidrug therapy (MDT).
The last recorded case of leprosy in the city was in 2015.
Meanwhile, the CHSO has also reminded the public against the spread of the Dengue virus this season.
The public is also reminded to clean their surroundings, especially the breeding sites, against the spread of the dengue-carrying virus mosquito and other diseases in the community. By Ian Jefrey Addatu
