BAGUIO CITY – City officials recently commended and congratulated Edgar Z. Kawig, Jr. for ranking 10th in the 2024 Asia Roasting Championship held from October 16-19, 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Under Resolution No. 670, series of 2024, local legislators stated that Kawig’s outstanding achievement at the 2024 Asia Roasting Championship reflects his unwavering commitment to excellence and serves as an inspiration for aspiring coffee professionals, as well as a point of pride for the city and the broader Philippine agriculture and coffee sectors.
Kawig, a Baguio-based Q-grader, coffee producer, processor, advocate for the growth of the coffee industry and owner of ‘The Red Soil Coffee Manufacturing,” demonstrated exceptional talent, dedication and enthusiasm in the field of coffee roasting.
He showed a deep commitment to expanding his knowledge and skills in the coffee industry having completed comprehensive training in coffee production, post-harvest practices, processing, roasting and cupping at the Barista and Coffee Academy of Asia from 2018-2021 in addition to participating in various national and international coffee training programs sponsored by government and private institutions.
Kawig made substantial contributions to the growth and development of the local coffee industry by mentoring young people in the art of coffee roasting, processing, and brewing while actively supporting locally owned coffee shops and roasteries, and engaging in numerous coffee-related events and initiatives at the regional and national levels.
The council claimed that as a result of the aforesaid exceptional performance and dedication to the craft, he was awarded the Grand Champion Title at the 2024 Philippine Coffee Roasting Competition held in Cagayan de Oro City from June 11-14, 2024, a victory led to his selection to represent the Philippines at the prestigious 2024 Asia Roasting Championship in Bangkok, Thailand last October 16-19, 2024.
In this international coffee roasting competition, Kawig demonstrated remarkable skill and craftsmanship, competing alongside 26 of the finest roasters from across Asia and ultimately securing an impressive 10th place finish further elevating the reputation of Philippine coffee in the global stage.
