BAGUIO CITY – Public servants, city employees, barangay officials, civil society organizations, and private individuals gathered at the Health Services Office on December 11, 2024 to deliver gifts to undernourished children they had adopted through Baguio City’s “Love Project: Adopt-an-Angel” program.
The initiative aims to provide essential nutrition and support to children under five years old, with sponsors contributing milk, vitamins, hygiene kits, necessities to improve the children’s health and well-being.
City Health Officer Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes emphasized the program’s importance and added that the project does not legally adopt the children but rather aims to show the love and support of the Baguio community through thoughtful gifts.
“This program started in 2010 to give smiles and joy this yuletide season, especially for children who are undernourished. It will evolve yearly until malnutrition significantly drops if not eradicated,” Dr. Brillantes added.
Out of 22,760 children aged 0-59 months in the city screened by the city’s Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association, 689 were found to be undernourished, and 186 were classified as overweight. Although these figures are considered low in terms of public health impact, health officials emphasize the importance of timely intervention to prevent serious health issues. -Mileyvonne Tiamzon
