MANKAYAN, Benguet– Some one hundred twenty-six individuals from the town’s 12 barangays were the initial beneficiaries of the mobile ‘tulong’ program of Benguet caretaker congressman and Anti-Crime and Terrorism through Community Involvement and Support (ACT-CIS) Party-list Rep. Eric Go Yap.
The assistance to these beneficiaries of the program, composed of 112 barangay health workers (BHWs) and barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), was distributed by representatives from the Benguet Congressional District office headed by Anthony Kuan and Mankayan officials led by Mayor Frenzel A. Ayong.
Earlier, Congressman Yap launched his mobile ‘tulong’ program during the period of the extended Luzonwide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to extend the basic services and relief assistance to people in the remote villages of the province heavily impacted by the ECQ implementation following the loss of jobs and sources of livelihood.
Mayor Ayong stated the municipal government will provide its counterpart to the relief assistance from the lawmaker’s office to deserving members of the vulnerable and marginalized sectors still in need of aid.
He claimed among those being considered by the municipal government to assist in the coming weeks will be the solo parents but the municipal government is still awaiting the validated list of beneficiaries from the concerned offices to ascertain the resources that can be allocated for the said purpose.
The municipal chief executive said that concerned offices of the municipal government, in close coordination with barangay officials, are now validating the list of beneficiaries from the different sectors for whatever available assistance that can be distributed to them.
Ayong expressed his gratitude to Congressman Yap and his staff for selecting beneficiaries of the mobile ‘tulong’ program from the municipality and coming over to distribute the assistance to the recipients because it is also important for them to see for themselves the state of the town for consideration in proposed projects to sustain the pace of development achieved prior to the ECQ implementation.
Despite being one of the five first-class municipalities in the province, Mankayan remains dependent on the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) from the national government for the implementation of priority development projects and enhance the delivery of basic services to the grassroots level through the past several decades.
Mankayan is a mineral-rich town playing host to the operation of the Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company, the Far Southeast Gold Resources Inc. and the Itogon-Suyoc Resources Inc., aside from being a vegetable-producing municipality courtesy of its upper barangays that host vast tracks of vegetable farms.
