BAGUIO CITY – Some twenty-four cultural dance contingents actively participated in the 2024 Panagbenga Cultural Dance competition that was recently held at the Melvin Jones football field that showcased the vibrant culture of the Cordillera.
This year’s number of participating contingents is double the12 cultural dance groups that joined the similar competition last year that is part of the annual conduct of the Panagbenga
The heart of the celebration featured 24 enchanting Panagbenga cultural dance performances, and each involved weaving together the vibrant traditions of the Cordilleran people. The performances were characterized by soulful chants, rhythmic gong beats, and captivating dance routines that brought to life the rich heritage of the region.
The winners of the Cultural Dance Competition were announced, with Saeng ya Kasay claiming the prestigious 1st Place and a substantial prize of 100,000 pesos. The Bimaak Cultural Dance Troupe secured the 2nd Place, earning a well-deserved 70,000 pesos, while the Sakusak Musical Ensemble clinched the 3rd Place with a prize of 50,000 pesos.
Kurt Alalag, the trainer of the University of the Cordilleras Cultural Dance Troupe Saeng Ya Kasay, expressed his joy after winning 1st Place, saying, “ Masayang masaya kasi lahat ng pagod at puyat nandoon na. Sabi ko bago sila pumasok kanina, paglabas niyo, pag-exit pagkatapos ng sayaw dapat no regrets, wala kayong pagsisisihan na hindi niyo ginawa yung best ninyo.”
He also emphasized the discipline of the students and their ability to balance studies and practice, saying, “Disciplined ang students and they balance their studies and practice at nakikinig sila.”
To recognize the efforts of all participants, a consolation prize of 40,000 pesos was awarded to every entry that did not secure a top spot.
In addition to the overall winners, special awards were presented to acknowledge exceptional contributions in specific categories.
The Sakusak Musical Ensemble received the Innovation in Musical Arrangement Award, showcasing their creativity and uniqueness in the musical realm. The Bimaak Cultural Dance Troupe was recognized for Excellence in Cultural Dance Attire, exemplifying outstanding craftsmanship and attention to detail in their costumes. Saeng ya Kasay received the Excellence in Choreography award, underscoring their mastery of dance composition and execution.
The Panagbenga Flower Festival 2024 not only celebrated the beauty of nature through its floral displays but also served as a platform for communities to showcase their cultural identity.
The event exemplified the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting the diverse heritage of the Cordilleran people. As the vibrant echoes of the cultural dance performances fade away, the memories of this celebration will linger, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of both participants and spectators alike.
