TABUK CITY, Kalinga – At least 41 defective weighing scales seized from vendors at the Dagupan Public Market were disposed of on August 30.
Market Supervisor George Gayumba said the City Market Operation Management Division (CMOMD) of the City Treasury Office confiscated the faulty weighing scales during their regular inspection and calibration conducted from January to August this year.
The CMOMD confiscates weighing scales that fail calibration, provide inaccurate readings, and are beyond repair.
Selling goods using defective scales is punishable under the Consumer Act of the Philippines or RA 7394. Under this act, violators are charged with corresponding penalties.
For consumers to avoid inaccurate weight of items they purchase, Gayumba advised them to check on the proof of calibration sticker posted on the weighing scale before buying.
Timbangan ng Bayan is also installed in various areas at the public markets to be used by vendors and consumers.
Together with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Philippine National Police, Gayumba said a mass inspection will be conducted this coming October in the city in celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month. By Rod Asurin
