The Lagawe Central School conducted a National Learning Remedial Program (NLRP) and Summer Academic Remedial Program (SARP) to their selected elementary students on May 13 to June 6, 2025.
The remedial programs focused on enhancing students’ skills and knowledge in literacy and numeracy.
According to Olivia D. Eheng, Principal II, the students who underwent the said programs were selected based on different criteria.
For the NLRP, the students are identified based on the results of the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) conducted by the Department of Education (DepEd) Central Office to the pupils from Grade 1 to 3.
“They identified one grade 3 student that belongs to the low emergent readers to undergo that [NLRP] program,” Eheng said.
On the other hand, Eheng explained the criterion for the SARP. She stated that the students who got failing marks from the previous academic year needed to attend the said program.
She said that this program will help the students to comply and to get passing marks after completing the SARP.
SUPPLEMENTING THE LAPSES
According to Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS) result in 2024, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) is the second highest in basic literacy nationwide.
In fact, last May, the DepEd-CAR conducted a training that focuses on proper handling and strategies that might help the teachers in teaching the children identified as low emergent readers.
“Ang training kasi namin ay napaka-pokus sa reading or reading strategies on how to properly teach the learners (Their training focuses on reading and reading strategies on how to properly teach the learners),” stated Eileen B. Napadawan, Master Teacher II.
She also added that addressing or supplementing this kind of problem needs to be done slowly, but surely following a process, such that it focuses on the basic learning competencies up to the higher thinking level approach.
LATEST MONITORING
Principal Eheng stated that currently they have enlisted nine Grade 1 pupils, seven Grade 2, fifteen Grade 3, 14 Grade 4, and 10 Grade 6. Overall, there are 11 pupils attending the NLRP and 44 students under SARP tallying to 55 students.
In addition, Napadawan shared that she was happy with the outcome of the said programs.
“It is good that we have this one [the SARP and NLRP], because it is really focused on students. Especially this 20-day program, we have seen improvements to the students. [So] this kind of program is really important in uplifting the skills and ability of students specifically in their reading skills and comprehension,” she ended.// Ariane Mae F.
