LINGAYEN, Pangasinan – The 7th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship, the first component tournament of Pangasinan Chess Festival, is scheduled this weekend, October 7-8, at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center, here.
Pangasinan Sports and Development and Management Council (PSDMC) Executive Officer Modesto Operania said the age group chess tournament is the ‘initial test’ for local chess players who participated in the provincial government-sponsored chess clinics held in two consecutive weekends last September.
“All chess clinics and chess tournaments sponsored by the provincial government are free-of-charge,” Operania said, as he lauded the Pangasinan Chess League for being an active long-time partner of the provincial administration in mounting chess events.
Since the PCF was launched during the administration of former Pangasinan governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr., chess players from Pangasinan and those from nearby provinces, and from Metro Manila travel to Pangasinan to take part in the age group chess fest of Pangasinan.
“PCF has then extended its reach, becoming the biggest chess fest in Northern Luzon,” Operania said.
Participants in the age group chess tournament will battle for dominance in the following age divisions: 8 and under, 10 and under, 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, 18 and under, and 20 and under.
Meanwhile, the PCF will stage the 6th Pangasinan Chess Championship in November, and the culminating event, the 8th Gov. Espino Open Chess Tournament in December, where local chess players join international masters and grand masters in this prestigious event.
