BAGUIO CITY – The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) said that ninety-five percent of the vehicular traffic accidents in the city over the past five months are due to human error compelling authorities to craft strategic measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
BCPO Strategic Management Team head Police Col. Judy Jasmin Palicos said that human error does not mean that it is only the driver that is at fault but there are also other factors such as the environment, road condition, infrastructure, among others, that affect the driving skills of individuals.
She claimed there is a need for a multi-pronged approach to avoid the occurrence of vehicular traffic accidents that involve the active participation of everyone to be able to realize a significant decline in such incidents in the future.
Based on the data made available by the BCPO from January to May 27, 2025, there were already some 375 vehicular traffic accidents that transpired in the different parts of the city, a much higher number compared to the 322 recorded during the same period last year.
Of the said number, 307 accidents resulted to damage to properties, 60 incidents resulted to physical injuries while 8 accidents resulted to homicide.
Further, 356 incidents involved motor vehicles while only 19 incidents involved motorcycles.
The BCPO disclosed that some 166 incidents occurred within the central business district area while the rest of the incidents happened in various parts of the city during the said period.
Palicos pointed out that the BCPO already started the implementation of its Operation Plan Discipline, Respect, Infrastructure, Vigilance and Education (DRIVE) to make motorists and the public fully aware of their responsibilities while on the road to avoid the occurrence of untoward incidents that might compromise the safety of the people.
She appealed to the public to support the initiative and become agents of change in their behavior when on the road to deter untoward incidents that might lead to loss of life or injury and damage to property. By Dexter A. See
