BAGUIO CITY – The office of councilor Joel Alangsab is launching a signature campaign in support of the city’s “Smoke Free Baguio Ordinance” which he authored and passed by the city council last year.
During the Smoke Free Task Force meeting Friday at City Hall, Alangsab said that he has written the Department of Education for its support in the activity. He added that various religious groups have already expressed their full support for the project.
Those wanting to sign the petition can also do so by visiting his office at the second floor of City hall.
“We do believe that a vast majority of the people of Baguio supports the ordinance. As elected leaders, we should make the protection of the public’s health and welfare our primary consideration,” Alangsab said. The task force is chaired by Mayor Mauricio Domogan.
During the meeting, it was revealed that 704 violators of the ordinance have been apprehended by the public order and safety division (POSD) from August of last year to March 15, 2017 with most apprehensions made in February.
Ordinance Number 34 series of 2017 prohibits the use, sale, distribution, and advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products in certain places, imposing penalties and providing funds thereof.
Dr. Donabel Tubera of the Health Services Office said those caught smoking or vaping are fined P1,000 for the first offense; P2000, second offense; and P3,000 for the third offense. Those caught violating its sales/access restriction and advertising and promotion ban are fined P2,000 for the first offense; P3,000, second offense; and P5,000 for the third offense.
Subsequent offenses would mean imprisonment for a period not exceeding three months or both at the discretion of the court. Suspension or revocation of business license or permit (in case of a business entity or establishment), if applicable.
