CALANASAN, Apayao – The Provincial Government of Apayao thru the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVET) awarded 85 sheep to 17 Farmer Livestock Students (FLS) in Calanasan under its Livestock Dispersal Livelihood Program, last September 12.
Said program seeks to support sheep production enhancement, food security, and malnutrition mitigation programs in the province.
Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Ralph M. Verzon said the program is in line with the vision of the Provincial Government under its leaders, Governor Elias C. Bulut Jr as well as Congresswoman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang for Apayao to be the Sheep Capital of the North.
The 17 initial beneficiaries were provided with 85 sheep, with 5 sheep awarded to each. The recipients met the requirements for animal housing and pasture areas. Three individuals will also later receive 15 sheep or 5 heads each.
These livestock farmers are receiving training in sheep production for 7 months and a half, which equates to 30 sessions of around 2 hours per day, once a week.
Farmer Livestock School on Sheep Production focal person Daisy Tunac-Aman, meanwhile, invited all interested farmers, out-of-school youths (OSYs), retirees, and business owners to avail said program. Nevertheless, she emphasized that those wanting to avail should be willing to undergo months of training, and that they should meet the set of guidelines which include the provision of pasture areas and Housing of animals.
