The Far North Luzon General Hospital and Training Center (FNLGHTC), in coordination with the Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Apayao, concluded a two-day training on sexually transmissible infections (STIs), HIV education, and behavior change motivation on May 23, 2025, at Star Jewel Lodge in Barangay San Isidro Sur.

A total of 22 health workers from various municipalities participated in the training, which aimed to strengthen the province’s local response to HIV and STI-related concerns through accurate education and practical interventions.

The first day of the session covered essential knowledge on STIs, HIV, and AIDS. It included a demonstration on proper condom use and an orientation on behavior change strategies. Discussions also introduced the concept of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Expression, and Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) to help foster inclusive health practices.

Participants were trained to recognize key STI symptoms such as painful urination, itching, discharge, ulceration, and abdominal pain. Common infections were categorized based on their causes—bacterial (e.g., gonorrhea, syphilis, chlamydia), protozoal (trichomoniasis), fungal (candidiasis), parasitic (pubic lice and scabies), and viral (genital warts, herpes, and hepatitis B).

Proper condom use was a core focus of the training, with detailed guidance on correct usage—from checking expiration dates to safe application, removal, and disposal. Trainers addressed frequent errors such as double condom use and pairing latex with oil-based lubricants, while also providing practical reminders on storage, communication with partners, and appropriate lubricant types.

This training is part of the province’s continuing efforts to equip local health personnel with relevant knowledge and practical skills in managing STIs and preventing HIV transmission. The PHO emphasized that regular capacity-building activities are important to ensuring an informed and responsive health system, especially at the community level. By Krizza Castillo
