LUNA, Apayao – Sixty cyclists from various government agencies gathered for the 124th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA) Fun Bike event earlier today, September 24.
The fun ride stretched across a 15-kilometer route and offered the participants a chance to show their fitness and their passion for cycling, a growing sport in Apayao.
The riders took off from the bypass road in Quirino, Luna and pedaled through scenic stretches before crossing the finish line at the Apayao Grandstand within Apayao Eco Tourism and Sports Complex. Though modest in distance, the route was designed to be beginner–friendly so that participants of all skill levels can take part in the said event.
PCSA Sports Coordinator Edralin Bongay hopes that the fun bike activity will become a permanent fixture in the annual PCSA celebration.
“This is the only the second time and gusto sana nating makita na maggrow ang cycling community ng Apayao, and to do that, we need more activities like this to promote and encourage people to try cycling,” Bongay said. “Cycling has numerous benefits, not just for health but also for the environment,” he added.
There has been an increased interest in cycling after the COVID-19 pandemic, and Bongay believes that activities like the fun bike can help develop and improve the cycling culture in the province. The health benefits of cycling – extending from improved cardiovascular health to lower stress levels – are a natural fit for the goals of the PCSA celebration which annually encourages government employees to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyles.
Aside from the fun bike, other wellness activities were held as part of the PCSA celebration such as team sports and recreational activities, all to promote a healthy work-life balance among government employees.
Bongay expects that the cycling community in the province will grow larger in the years to come. “Napakalaki ng potential ng cycling dito sa Apayao. With more biking events, we can really encourage people to get out, get fit, and realize the joy of cycling,” he stated. By Jess Christley Marquez
