LUNA, Apayao – In a groundbreaking event that signifies a significant step in reaffirming the province’s stance as the last nature’s frontier in the far north, the Provincial Government of Apayao hosted its first Environmental Summit yesterday, August 15, 2023 at the BGVJr Memorial Sports Center, in Luna, Apayao.
The summit, which brought together experts, policymakers, planners, and stakeholders from various sectors, was held in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners -Northern Luzon (PIEP-NL) Apayao.
The summit saw an impressive turnout of 300 participants who engaged in interactive discussions, and panel sessions. The summit revolved around the theme “Yapayaos of the 21st century: Balancing Progress, Nature, Culture and Human well-being in a changing World,” emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in combating climate change, conserving natural resources, addressing various environmental issues, and protecting the province’s rich biodiversity.
Topics discussed during the summit include the proposed Biosphere Reserve of Yapayao (BRyA), carbon market and its potential as nature-based solution to climate change, fighting deforestation through Geotourism, mineral utilization and conservation, process on environmental projects, renewable energy, hydro power/water utilization and management for sustainable development, and solid waste management updates among others.
The Philippine Eagle Foundation also featured a film titled ‘Saving our Eagles’, while the PGA’s Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) facilitated the awarding of financial assistance for the implementation of ecological solid waste management in all municipalities.
