LUNA, Apayao – Municipalities in the province of Apayao showcased their oral traditions and skills in indigenous embroidery designs during the celebration of the 26th IPRA Commemoration on October 24 at the Apayao Eco Tourism and Sports Complex (AETSC) Ground.
The oral tradition contests included Tabbag and Dissodi, while Magrammat embroidery on styles and designs.
Tabbag is an Isnag discourse that is frequently conducted by elders during a wedding ceremony. It can be performed as a dangdangay chant or as a poetry called dindinnapuwan. On the other hand, Dissodi is a traditional isnag song that is frequently sung during wooing by couples. It can also be used as an introductory music for say-am.
Winners of the competition:
Calanasan emerged as the champion in the performance of Tabbag, earning them a P6,000.00 cash prize. Conner took home the second place award of P4,000.00, while Kabugao took third place and received P3,000.00. Flora and Pudtol each got P2,000.00 consolation prizes.
For the Dissodi event, Calanasan again won the first place with P3,000.00 award, Conner taking second place with P2,500.00, and Pudtol third with P2,000.00, Luna and Kabugao received P1,000.00 consolation prizes.
In the Magrammat contest, Pudtol’s artistic designs and styles earned them first place with a P3,000.00 cash prize. Kabugao claimed the second place award of P2,500.00, while Calanasan got third and received P2,000.00. The remaining municipalities were given consolation prizes of P1,000.00.
The celebration emphasized and recognized traditional wisdom as a cornerstone to understanding nature, as well as the need for particular steps to protect their rights and preserve their distinct cultures and ways of life. By Krizza Castillo
