LUNA, Apayao – The record of teen pregnancies in Apayao is still high during the first semester of 2024, with over 191 total documented cases, data from the Provincial Health Office(PHO) showed on Monday, August 12.
Of the 191 young girls, 178 of them are between the ages 15-19, and 13 of them are within ages 10-14 years old.
These results prompted the PHO to craft and implement programs to curb the rising number, in which one is the “Key Assistance to Developing Adolescents” (KADA).
Thru said program the PHO shall be organizing lectures and seminars for the youth and parents in various locations regarding reproductive health and the risks as well as the challenges and negative effects of early child bearing to teen parents.
Some studies on teen pregnancy and its health-related risks include possible complications due to immature bodies, antenatal anxiety or depression, and may even result to abortion at its worst.
Initially, the PHO said there shall be 7 rural health units (RHUs) in every municipality serving as KADA centers.
Governor Elias. Bulut Jr. and Congresswoman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, previously pointed out improving the health system in Apayao in order to provide the best possible needed services, included in this, was the funding and establishment of quality health care facilities.
Moreover, PHO and its partners advised the community, especially parents to look into how teenage pregnancy can be prevented. If their child acts unusual like a sudden change in behavior and normal activities, it would be best to address the noticeable early signs before it is too late.
Also, parents who are busy with their work should find and spend time with children to help them cope with possible problems to prevent their children seeking help from others who may persuade them to engage in sexual activities. By Arjay Baysa
