LUNA, Apayao – The provincial government has launched a two-week Psychosocial Support Program for child survivors of sexual abuse, beginning May 16 at the Apayao Tourism and Sports Complex (ATSC) Evacuation Center in Barangay San Gregorio in Luna town.
Held under the theme “Healing Hearts, Rebuilding Lives,” said program offers a protected space for healing, with structured support in order to help survivors rebuild confidence and process trauma through therapy, creative activities, and guided reflection.
The program is jointly supported by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, Provincial Disability Affairs Office, Provincial Governor’s Office, ChildFund Philippines, the Provincial Health Office (PHO), and the Apayao Police Provincial Office, with the assistance of municipal police stations ensuring safety throughout the sessions.
Among the components are individual counseling sessions with Fr. Adel Agcaoili and the Yakap Team, group empowerment activities, and play therapy sessions facilitated by ChildFund’s Sharmaine Batullayan. Creative workshops such as arts and crafts, poster-making, poetry, and gardening all designed to provide safe emotional expression and strengthen resilience.
Mental health modules are handled by professionals from the PHO, and cover topics such as stress management, self-awareness, and personal growth. Medical and dental consultations are also being provided for holistic care.
The program runs until May 31 and it underscores the province’s commitment to a survivor-centered approach and prioritizes recovery, empowerment, and long-term well-being. The initiative also reflects the provincial government’s strategy to address gender-based violence not only through protection, but through active rehabilitation.
Incumbent Board Member and Vice Governor-elect Kyle Mariah Chelsea Bulut-Cunan, Congresswoman Eleanor Bulut-Begtang, and Governor Elias C. Bulut Jr. have expressed strong support for the program and recognizes mental health as an important pillar in recovery and rehabilitation.
A concluding activity will be held on May 30 to honor the courage of the participants. The ceremony will include a reflection session, awarding of certificates, and recognition of progress made over the course of the program. By Loremia Pareja
