LUNA, Apayao – Apayao celebrated its 30th founding anniversary in spectacular fashion on February 16 with the staging of “Apayao: Daloy ng Tatlong Dekada’t Higit Pa,” the province’s first-ever musical theatre production.
Held at the BGVJR Memorial Gymnasium, the show was a resounding success, showcasing Apayao’s rich history, culture, and burgeoning artistic talent.
Board Member Hon. Kyle Mariah Chelsea Bulut-Cunan, in her welcome remarks, highlighted the ambitious undertaking: “Tonight, together we will commemorate and celebrate 30 years of the province of Apayao. This is the brainchild of our creative and innovative governor, a musical theatre production that will inform, inspire, and showcase Apayao over the past 30 years.”
Directed by Raffy Tejada and written by Eljay Deldoc, with music by William Manzano and arrangements by Drei Sugay, the musical unfolds as an extensive narrative tracing Apayao’s journey. The plot mingles the stories of several generations of yApayao, showcasing their struggles and triumphs. From the province’s origins as part of Kalinga-Apayao to its establishment as an independent province in 1995, the musical explores themes of resilience, unity, and cultural preservation.
Key moments in Apayao’s history are dramatized through song and dance, highlighting the challenges faced and the progress achieved. The narrative culminates in a celebration of Apayao’s identity and its bright future.
“The play is not just a performance, but a tribute to our rich culture, history, and unity as a province. For 30 years, we have witnessed the growth of Apayao, and now we will show, on this stage, our journey as a province with unity and concern for each other. Our history is not just a memory; it is a living spirit that we continue to live and be proud of,” Bulut-Cunan added.
The production featured a stellar cast such as veteran actor Robert Seña, and wife Isay Alvarez, Noel Comia, Jr., and Apayao’s very own Eleina Ruth Estelon, supported by a talented ensemble of performers from La Salle dance companies (contemporary and folk), Ipasindayaw Performing Arts Bureau, ANIAHS Dance and Performing Arts, Apayao Capitol Chorale, Ampayag Cultural Group, and the newly formed Apayao Community Theatre.
The performance was a tribute to the collective spirit and dedication of Apayao’s artistic community. “Apayao: Daloy ng Tatlong Dekada’t Higit Pa” is now a landmark achievement, marking a new era for the performing arts in the province. By Krizza Joy Castillo
