LUNA, Apayao – The Provincial Health Office (PHO) in collaboration with the Fred Hollow’s Foundation and Philippine Eye Research Institute (PERI) and Department of Education (DepEd) conducted the National Vision Screening Program (NVSP) Training of Trainers for School Nurse on January 29-30, 2025.
This is to equip school nurses with skills needed to conduct vision screenings for young students so they can detect early any potential vision issues so they can refer it for further evaluation and treatment.
As part of the training, a return demonstration was conducted at selected schools in Luna District, where participating nurses applied their screening techniques on 156 kindergarten learners from Luna Central School, San Isidro Elementary School, San Isidro Norte Elementary School, Tumog Elementary School, Dugapan Elementary School and Quirino Elementary School.
According to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Mark Joleen Calban, the PHO will begin vision screenings in targeted schools in the province starting next week, and this will integrate NSVP into the Province wide Health System for a more sustainable eye health program for yApayao learners.
