LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, July 6(PIA) – – The local government of Atok is adjudged as outstanding LGU in the implementation of literacy program at the regional level and will vie for the national 2018 National Literacy Awards (NLA) under the 4th to 6th class municipal category.
Atok LGU won over Baay-Licuan LGU in Abra. Atok Mayor Peter Alos underscored the unity and cooperation of everybody in the local government including the Department of Education – Atok District which contributed in making the awards possible.
The NLA aims to recognize best practices in literacy, which help alleviate poverty, provide livelihood, address welfare needs, promote freedom, and make education facilities accessible.
The Outstanding Local Government Unit award is given to LGUs that have developed and implemented literacy policies, programs and projects, which have positively created impacts on the quality of life of the people.
Outstanding Literacy Program, on the other hand, is given to civil society organizations, private organizations and private educational/academic institutions, that have developed and implemented literacy programs which have had positive impacts on learners and communities.
The Department of Education through the Literacy Coordinating Council is set to announce the 2018 NLA in September.
DepEd Regional Alternative Learning System Focal Person Marcelo Talamayan chaired the screening of the NLA at the regional level. Other Regional Literacy Coordinating Council members who participated in the screening and validation include the Department of Interior and Local Government, Benguet State University, National Economic and Development Authority and the Philippine Information Agency.
