The Baguio fire station will be showcasing its all-women firefighting team to highlight that women can also perform the duties and responsibilities of the male-dominated profession.
Fire Superintendent Mirasol Odiber, the first female city fire marshal, said that women firefighters had been trained in the various aspects of firefighting ranging from investigation, inspection, emergency response, among others, that is why they can be assigned to do the various tasks related to firefighting.
She claimed that women are always part of the firefighting team being deployed to help contain fire incidents in any part of the city where they perform various roles.
The city fire marshal pointed out that during the celebration of fire prevention month and women’s month this March, people will be able to witness an all-women firefighting team that will be accompanying their male counterparts in firefighting operations to highlight the role of women in this profession.
Currently, there are 29 female personnel of the Baguio fire station to compliment their 56 male counterparts in the 85 personnel comprising the manpower of the city fire station.
According to her, it is the first time that the role of female firefighters will be showcased and highlighted by the city fire station to be able to give importance to the vital role that women play in the various aspects of firefighting. Odiber emphasized that personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection, whether male or female, are appropriately trained in the various aspects of firefighting that is why they can be easily assigned to perform different tasks on rotation basis so that they will be able to excel in their desired fields of expertise in the said profession.
Earlier, the Baguio Fire Station in coordination with concerned stakeholders launched the various activities that had been lined up by the BFP in celebration of the fire prevention month this March.
Odiber appealed to the public to ensure they can contribute in the prevention of fire incidents in the city by making sure they always close their gas tanks and put off lighted candles before leaving their houses.
Further, she also advised the city residents to avoid octopus connections in their houses to prevent the occurrence of untoward incidents that might trigger fire incidents that could lead to loss of lives and damage to properties.
