BAGUIO CITY – City officials recently granted financial assistance amounting to PhP500,000 from the 2024 current appropriations under the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CDRRM) quick response fund of the local government to Negros Occidental which was earlier declared under a state of calamity due to the massive devastation brought by the eruption of Mount Kanlaon.
Under Ordinance No. 83, series of 20224, the financial assistance will be made available to Kanlaon City, Bago City and the towns of La Castellana and La Carlota, all in Negros Occidental which were declared under a state of calamity due to the massive devastation brought by the eruption of Mount Kanlaon, subject to availability of funds.
The council authorized the City Mayor to facilitate the transfer of the amount and to coordinate with the provincial government of Negros Occidental for the proper use of the donation pursuant to the principles of transparency and accountability.
The city government through the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has allocated funds to provide assistance to localities affected by disasters as part of its humanitarian efforts and commitment to the principles of solidarity and resilience.
Earlier, Negros occidental has been severely affected by the eruption of Mount Kanlaon that caused significant destruction and loss, including the evacuation of multiple families and the destruction of countless homes.
In light of the widespread devastation, the Negros Occidental provincial government declared a state of calamity pursuant to the pertinent provisions of Republic Act 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and management Act of 2010 to facilitate immediate response and recovery efforts.
Moreover, the Kanlaon local government wrote a letter dated December 9, 2024 to the Baguio City government requesting financial assistance given the effects of Mount Kanlaon eruption to provide basic services and wellbeing of its constituents.
The Baguio City government, recognizing the urgency of providing support to fellow local government units affected by disasters, is committed to extending financial assistance to help alleviate the hardships being faced by the affected residents of Kanlaon City. By Dexter A. See
