A 5.74% decrease in overall crime rate was recorded in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. While this reflects a positive trend, it also calls for continued vigilance, especially with the increased risks and challenges that come with the 2025 National and Local Elections.
Records of the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) show that a total reported crime dropped from 418 in 2024 to 394 in 2025. Significant reductions were observed in Rape (-47.06%), Theft (-69.84%), Robbery (-50.00%), and Violation of Republic Act 7610 or the “Anti-Child Abuse Law” (-65.00%). Notably, 151 operations against wanted persons were tallied, leading to 119 arrests, including 32 Top Most Wanted Persons (TMWP).
An increase in cases of drugs by 9.52% was also noted, attributed to the intensified anti-illegal drug operations conducted by BCPO. For the same period, a total of 18 BCPO-led anti-drug operations were conducted, resulting in the arrest of 24 suspects and the confiscation of almost Php 500,000 worth of shabu and marijuana.
Similarly, the rise in cases related to the Comprehensive Law on Firearms & Ammunition (RA 10591) is linked to the strict implementation of the Omnibus Election Code’s gun ban for the upcoming National and Local Elections. As of this date, 33 firearms have been voluntarily surrendered, while 4 were confiscated.
BCPO City Director, PCol. Ruel D. Tagel, emphasized that road safety is a shared responsibility, urging the public to observe traffic laws and practice responsible driving. Records show an increase in reckless imprudence cases, from 195 in the first quarter of 2024 to 255 this year. He highlighted that while the reduction in major crimes is a positive development, the challenges brought by the election season and the rising number of traffic-related incidents must be addressed. “Let’s stay proactive and united in ensuring the well-being of our community,” PCol. Tagel said.
