Baguio City – The BBB@CBI drivers out-clashed Irisan in their game last Monday July 20, 2015 in Bracket Y of the 9th YMCA Cup to what was a transition game that gave the BBB@CBI drivers their second win. BBP gave Irisan a hard chase throughout the game to nip a three point advantage after the last canto, 76-73.

Coming out from a one point deficit in the first canto, the drivers pushed on to control the boards with a 20-14 blast to take the front seat 36-31 in the second canto. Meanwhile Irisan took their defensive strategies to work on the third canto limiting the drivers to only eleven conversions from the field to take back the front seat 52-47.

The early minutes of the fourth canto saw the BBB@CBI drivers starting to rally back from a five point deficit in the third as Jonathan Cortez of the drivers lead the pack in a flurry of shots beyond the arc that got the drivers back on the game on the dying minutes of the fourth canto at 66-66, forcing

Irisan to give up three quick fouls. Five free throw conversions from the line gave the drivers the edge at 68-71, however, two field goals from Irisan’s Bryan Flores equalized the score at 73-73 on the dying seconds of the fourth canto. A three pointer by Jonathan Cortez to put his team back on the lead with 30 seconds remaining. To gain composure, Irisan called their last time out but the drivers defended the boards to the last second of play to win.

The Knights jolted the Sunday school in their re-scheduled game last July 15, 2015 by 12 points. They dominated the boards from the first to the fourth canto of play, 73-61, to what was a running game for the Knights. This earned them their fifth win in bracket C, giving them assurance for a slot in the semi final round.

In other previous games, a close battle ensued in game one last July 8 in bracket M that featured the YMCA Basketball Stars muscling their way against GT Quest, however, losing steam to lose, 76-77, at the final buzzer.

The Basketball Stars shaved GT Quests’ lead on the first canto of play to tie the score at 19 all at the dying seconds of the first canto, but a foul was committed against GT Quests’ Eduardo Capillan who gave the lead, 21-20. A conversion from a turn over by Silver Ngoddo gavce GT Quest a 23-20 lead at the quarter’s end.

The Basketball Stars chipped of the lead of the GT’s till the last seconds of the second canto via a basket by Paolo Almazora to tie the score,39-39, and a free throw by Kelvin Lagutan gavethe front seat to the Stars, 40-39.

The third quarter action ensued on a slow pace with only 18 points by GT while limiting the Basketball Stars to 12. This gave GT a five point lead to advance in the fourth canto of play. A tight ballgame ensued until the dying minutes of play, 69-all. A foul from the Basketball Stars gave GT the upper hand as Ngoddos’ converted his foul throws. Two straight field goals by Ngoddos stretched the lead forcing the Basketball Stars to give up a quick foul on the dying seconds. A conversion from the 15-foot line by Christopher Maurera gave GT a 77-73 lead. Basketball Stars’ Kevin Obra, at the 3.9 second mark, looked for a possible four-point play above the arc, putting up a three point shot to beat the buzzer, but with no foul to boot, gave GT’s the win.

On the other hand, Baguio Water District-B spoiled a possible YMCA Basketball Club win during overtime slipping a two point win, 81-79, in the matchups last July 10 for bracket A.  BWD-B was limited to only nine field goals on the second canto, trailed by nine at the end of the third canto of play 51-42, but came back on the fourth canto with a barrage of points courtesy of Raymund Dizon, Reynante Verganio, Guiller Dumenden, Charles Olsina, and Bradford Dixon, who together controlled the boards and putting up 30 big points to tie the score,71-all, and force overtime. Ensuing defensive plays by both teams ended on an equalizer by Simon Vammas, 79-79, after Basketball Stars Jayson Kitong and Nyler Ludaes missed each of their foul throws at the dying seconds of overtime play. That gave Raymund Dizon the chance to unleash a two pointer for a BWD win.
