City officials recently requested the Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) and school administrators of all public and private schools in the city to verify the allegations that certain establishments around their premises are allegedly catering and serving as venues for vaping and smoking activities to the detriment of students in the schools and undertake the immediate and appropriate actions.
Under Resolution No. 691, series of 2023, city legislators stated that there are reports that certain establishments around the Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) are catering and serving as venue for vaping and smoking activities for students of the said school to their detriment which needs to be properly and immediately addressed by concerned authorities pursuant to the pertinent provisions of related laws and ordinances governing vaping and smoking.
During the Scout Official for a Day (SOFAD) regular session held on October 23, 2023, the SOFAD Council adopted the proposal of SOFAD Councilor Ashanti June O. Pongod that requested the BCPO and the school administrators of all public and private education institutions to verify the allegations that certain establishments around the said schools are catering and serving as venues for vaping and smoking activities to the detriment of students and that school administrators should undertake the immediate and appropriate actions to address the said concern.
The council claimed that emerging data suggests links to chronic lung disease and asthma as well as associations between dual use of e-cigarettes and smoking with cardiovascular diseases.
Further, smoking and vaping exposes oneself to all kinds of chemicals that people do not yet understand and that are probably not safe for their health.
The body also requested the BCPO and school administrators to submit to the council their respective reports on the matter for information and appropriate legislative action.
Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the concerned offices for their information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action. By Dexter A. See
