LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The Benguet General Hospital (BeGH) inaugurated this week the new mammogram facility which will aid in the early detection and prevention of breast cancer which is considered as one of the province’s top ten leading causes of death.
The establishment of the P 4.32 million-worth facility is in line with Goal Number 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) particularly on the reduction of mortality from non-communicable diseases such as cancer, said Dr. Maria Imelda Ulep, BeGH Chief of Hospital.
Based on the statistical data, breast cancer was ranked sixth and eighth in 2015 and 2016, respectively, as leading cause of death in the province.
The facility will provide additional service for patients who are required to undergo breast check up and have suspected unusual growth for early detection and prevention and those already having the disease to prevent further complications, added Ulep.
The mammogram fee is based on an amended provincial ordinance incorporating the other hospital services.
The facility is established from the hospital’s cost recovered revenue. BeGH operates as an economic enterprise. Through an ordinance, its management was transferred to the provincial government.
Ulep said there are visiting consultants who take charge of the mammography services.
