Everything that passes our table and reaches our mouths is the result of the hardworking hands of men and women in agriculture and fishery. The whole month of May, the nation celebrates Farmers and Fisherfolks to honor them for their initiative, innovative and humble hearts in providing products and produce we enjoy everyday.
The Department of Agriculture–Cordillera (DA-CAR) hosted a week-long series of activities from May 23 to 30, 2025. With the theme “Makabagong Magsasaka at Mangingisda, Susi sa Masaganang Bagong Pilipinas” the event aimed to raise awareness and appreciation to make farming, fishing, and more known to the people of Baguio City. Activities such as on-the-spot poster-making contests and cultivating activities highlight the importance of recognizing Agri workers young and old, owners and children alike.
Mr. Jonathan llanes, Public Relations and Information officer of DA-CAR, offered words of encouragement and reminders for our fellow farmers, fisherfolks, Agribusiness owners, and farm laborers, “Always coordinate with your provincial and municipal agriculture officers, they are the frontliners when it comes to the agriculture sector in the provinces and municipalities,” He emphasized. Stressed the importance of registering with the Registry System for the Basic Sectors in Agriculture (RSBSA) and becoming part of the Farmers Cooperative Association (FCA) which provides a vital network for bridging support and opportunities.
Being an agri worker isn’t just about sustaining the economy but rather it’s about raising families, building communities, managing livelihoods that serve both personal and national needs. Waking up at the crack of dawn to get the best catch, laboring under the sun to harvest crops. These daily acts of grit and dedication deserve recognition.
That is why Farmers and Fisherfolks Month matters. It’s a time to acknowledge the often-unseen hands that feed the nation and give the long-overdue recognition and praise due to them. By Meann Henderson
