LUNA, Apayao – Basketball icon Ricci Rivero, shooting guard of the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters and a two-time UAAP champion both the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons and De La Salle University (DLSU) Green Archers, served as the guest athlete during the opening ceremony of the 30th Apayao Founding Anniversary Sports Fest on January 28.
“You are not only celebrating Apayao’s 30th Founding Anniversary but also your passion and dedication to sports. Growing up in Ilagan, Isabela, I understand what it means to chase big dreams. Like many of you, I started playing basketball in my hometown, never imagining I would represent schools and universities in Manila and even our country,” Rivero shared.
He encouraged the young athletes by stating, “Dreams don’t recognize boundaries, financial, or personal burdens. Remember, dreaming is free, but achieving those dreams requires everything you’ve got. You must dream boldly and commit to the process.”
Rivero emphasized that hard work and dedication are crucial for success. “Every successful athlete knows that talent alone won’t take you to the top; it’s about the hours spent training and choosing discipline over comfort that will shape your future.”
Acknowledging the inevitability of setbacks, he said, “Failure is part of the journey. You’ll lose games and make mistakes. Don’t let those moments define you; instead, let them fuel your hunger to come back stronger. Every great athlete has faced failure at some point; what sets them apart is their refusal to give up.”
Outside athletic excellence, Rivero likewise urged personal growth. “Strive not just to be great athletes but also great people. Use the discipline you learned in sports to succeed in all areas of life. Represent your hometown with pride and integrity.”
Concluding his message, Rivero instilled confidence to the yApayao athletes. “You are full of talent and heart. Believe in yourselves, trust the process, and know that there are no limits to what you can achieve. Dream big, work hard, and keep your eyes on the prize!” By Loremia Pareja
