LA TRINIDAD, Benguet, July 10 – Chreza Banes, a 14 year old, grade 9 student of Twin Peaks High Scool in Tuba Benguet won the Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council(CDRRMC)- led Essay Writing Contest at the Department of Education Regional Office here on July 6.
Opening her essay with a Benjamin Franklin Quote, “If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail,” Banes went on to explain that “Preparedness is the state of readiness where you are knowledgeable of the things that must be done before, during and after a calamity strikes.”
Preparedness which is a key to minimize injuries, loss of lives and damage to properties must involve all four thematic areas of DRRM, which are prevention and mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation and recovery, she added.
CRDRRMC, in partnership with DepEd – CAR, conducted the essay writing simultaneous with a poster making contest in observance of July as National Disaster Resilience Month(NDRM).
Each of the eight DepEd districts in the region, namely Abra, Apayao, Baguio City, Benguet, Ifugao, Kalinga, Tabuk City and Mountain Province were represented in both contests which focus was on the 2018 NDRM theme of “Katatagan sa Kalamidad ay Makakmtan, Kapag Sapat ang Kaalaman sa Kalamidad”.

For the poster making contest, 11 year old Grade 6 student Christa Angelee Santiago of Rizal Central School of Rizal,Kalinga won first place. Both Banes and Santiago will represent Cordillera in the national NDRM essay and poster making contests.
Serving as judges during the contests were representatives from the CRDRRMC member agencies of Office of Civil Defense, Department of Education, National Economic Development Authority, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Science and Technology and Philippine Information Agency.
Formerly the National Disaster Consciousness Month, this July observance was renamed to NDRM through the Executive Order No. 29 issued by President Rodrigo Duterte on June 28, 2017 to shift the observance’s highlights from disaster awareness building to disaster resilience (PIA CAR with Jenibel Dizon/ISU Intern)
