BANGUED, Abra – The establishment of a new office in and the appointment of a new provincial head of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in the province of Abra ushered the intensified implementation of the program of the national government on food security.
Immediately after her assumption to office, BFAR-Abra Provincial Director Janet Daguio initiated the dispersal of around 200,000 fingerlings of tilapia and catfish (hito) to the fisherfolks living along the Abra River.
BFAR also distributed fish feeds such as Prima starter, grower and finisher to the recipients of the fingerlings to ensure fast growth of the fingerlings.
In order to sustain the fishing industry in the province, the BFAR likewise conducted training on poly-culture and fishpond culture to the local fisherfolk of Tubo, Pilar, Malibcong, Licuan-Baay, Danglas, Lagayan and Bangued.
BFAR also procured eight boats for distribution to 8 municipalities. Four non-motorized boats will be given to Villaviciosa, Lagayan, Langiden and Dolores; and the other four motorized boats to Bangued, Bucay, La Paz ken San Juan.
Daguio said rice-fish culture will also be re-introduced. This will start during the first cropping season when rain water is abundant in the ricefields. This project will be implemented in the municipalities of Dolores, Bucay, Bucloc, Boliney, Sallapadan, San Isidro and Lacub.
She also announced that there are available fingerlings for distribution to walk-in clients for seeding in communal bodies of water such as creeks and rivers in the province.
