KABUGAO, Apayao – The province, through the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Apayao, kicked off its Fire Prevention Month on March 1, 2025, with a motorcade promoting community-wide fire safety awareness.
This year’s theme, “Sa pag-iwas sa sunog, hindi ka nag-iisa,” stresses the need for a collective approach to fire prevention, and supports the role of authorities and residents in guaranteeing safety.
Four major fire incidents were recorded in Apayao in 2024, causing ₱1,597,000 in damages. While no injuries or casualties were reported, the causes of electrical overloading, tampered fuse boxes, loose connections, and open flames emphasize the continued need for alertness.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Fire Protection-Apayao has already reported one fire case this year, which remains under investigation.
Provincial Fire Marshal FSUPT Mark Anthony P. Dangatan reminded the public that fire prevention is a collective responsibility and stressed the importance of Fire Prevention Month, observed annually in March under Proclamation No. 115-A (1966). He noted that higher temperatures and lower humidity during the dry season increase fire risks, making proactive safety measures crucial.
“Fire prevention isn’t just the responsibility of firefighters; it’s a collective effort,” Insp. Dangatan stated. “Each individual plays a crucial role in creating a safer community,” he added.
Activities have been lined up to raise fire safety awareness and strengthen community engagement. These include a motorcade to fire stations, a Community Fire Prevention Plan workshop, “Oplan Ligtas na Pamayanan” initiatives, open house and station tours for students, a fun run on March 5, and the culminating “Buckets with Love” program.
