BONTOC, Mountain Province – The Local Government Unit of Bontoc, through the Municipal Health Office (MHO) led by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Diga Kay Gomez, has taken significant steps to enhance oral health among children.
As part of its initiative of bringing government services to the community, various offices of the Bontoc LGU and partner government agencies visited Barangays Alab, Balili, and Gonogon, on February 20, 2025.
Among the services provided was the distribution of dental kits for distribution to all Day Care children.
As part of this initiative, the respective Barangay LGUs through the Barangay Health Workers/ Barangay Nutrition Scholars, along with Child Development Workers have committed to incorporating tooth brushing into the daily routines of the children. This practice aims to instill the habit of brushing teeth after meals, which is recognized as one of the most effective and economical methods for maintaining dental health.
Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Venous Faith Cofulan of the MHO emphasized the critical role of oral hygiene in a child’s overall well-being.
“Oral health should never be overlooked because it is closely linked to our general health. A healthy, confident smile starts with proper oral care, and children must learn good dental habits early on. We want to teach them the value of taking care of their oral health for a lifetime of healthy smiles,” she stated.
February is recognized as National Dental Health Month, as per Proclamation No. 559 issued in 2004, which aims to raise public awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene and health.
Through initiatives like this, the Bontoc LGU is committed to promoting preventive healthcare and ensuring the well-being of the younger generation. This program also exemplifies the government’s effort to bring services closer to the grassroots level, fostering a healthier community. // Zenith Vale Changat
