BONTOC, Mountain Province – In its effort to equip the persons with disabilities (PWDs) in this capital town with practical skills to enhance their livelihood opportunities, the municipal government through the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) conducted a Shoe Repair Training on May 28, 2025.
This initiative brought together one participant from each of Bontoc’s 16 barangays, allowing them to learn essential shoe repair techniques under the guidance of trainer David Tol-an, a skilled shoemaker in the locality.
Before the hands-on session began, Disability Affairs Officer Maria Codeo encouraged participants to embrace the opportunity fully.
“This training is designed to equip you, our fellow PWDs, with practical skills that can help you earn, foster self-reliance, and even open your own small business,” she said.
In an interview, Mayor Jerome “Chagsen” Tudlong, Jr., expressed his strong support for the initiative, reaffirming the municipal government’s commitment to inclusivity.
“We want to ensure that no one is left behind. This training empowers our PWD community to live with dignity and independence,” the mayor emphasized.
To enhance the learning experience, participants were encouraged to bring worn-out or damaged shoes for hands-on practice. They were also provided with essential shoe repair tools, including a shoe repair hammer, pliers, shoe glue, needles and thread, and heavy-duty scissors. This practical approach not only teaches valuable skills but also fosters confidence and self-reliance among participants. By Shannon Anthea S. Pagaduan
