LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Clinching their seventh win since 2014, the Mountain Collegian (MC) have once again dominated the Regional Higher Education Press Conference (RHEPC) held in their home ground, Benguet State University (BSU) on February 12-14.
RHEPC is an annual event wherein campus journalists from the universities in the region compete to showcase their journalism excellence.
Out of 10 participating colleges and universities, BSU defended its throne at the Northern Philippine Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCTC) – Solibao Hall, procuring 459 overall points.
The participating schools include Baguio Central University, Divine Word College of Bangued, Ifugao State University, Kalinga State University – Rizal Campus, Mountain Province State University, St. Louis University, St. Louis College of Bulanao, St. Tonis College Inc., and the University of Cordilleras.
MC, the official student publication of BSU, claimed first place for group events and second place for individual events. The events for the group category include overall best magazine, newsletter, tabloid, and literary folio with supplementing awards such as best section in news, editorial, opinion, feature, development communication, and sports as well as best layout design for each print. While the individual events are feature writing, photojournalism, news writing, development communication writing, layouting, opinion writing, editorial writing, editorial cartooning, literary graphics illustration, among others.
“More than this championship, I am more proud of what our editorial board has become. I can say that this year’s RHEPC was more challenging but we grew so much as a team,” Liezhel Joy Ramos, the Editor-in-Chief of MC, said.
She furthered that the team’s cooperation and dedication have contributed to defend their title at the RHEPC tourney.
Furthermore, the immense training together with the MC alumni helped the team to prepare for this year’s contest.
“The editorial board went through numerous and intensive in-house cliniquing with various speakers and the Mountain Collegian (MC) alumni who willingly visited us in the office to help us improve our works,” Ramos shared.
The event was deemed successful as the participants from different schools have showcased their skills and dedication.
“Teamwork and cooperation among the participants made the event successful,” Karen Laking, the president of Tertiary School Publication Advisers Association-CAR (TSPAA-CAR) and MC Adviser, enthused.
TSPAA-CAR is an organization for all the advisers of student publications from the universities of the region. By Lyka Capsula
