TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) approved and adopted a resolution requesting funding from the Office of the Civil Defense for the construction of another evacuation center in Barangay Balong during its fourth quarter meeting recently.
The resolution was based on the rapid risk assessment during the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone ‘Paeng’ where the council saw the necessity for another evacuation center aside from the one in Barangay Agbannawag for swifter response to flood-prone areas.
At the height of Tropical Cyclone ‘Paeng’, flood-hit individuals in Barangay San Juan had to be evacuated to the provincial government’s evacuation center in Bulanao as the Agbannawag evacuation center was too far and San Juan’s barangay hall was not available to be used as temporary shelter at the time, CDRRM Officer Julie Teckney said.
The council is requesting for a funding of Php 50 million to build a similar facility as the one in Agbannawag.
“The evacuation center shall also serve as a multipurpose building to provide a venue for socio-cultural activities, general assemblies/meetings, seminars, etc.,” the resolution stated.
Identified site of the evacuation center is a lot beside the city’s Agro-food Center in Balong.
