TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is urging residents, institutions, and establishment owners to practice waste segregation at source as the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Dilag is almost full.
CENRO’s Rielle Christian Domatog said in an interview that the cell 1 of the sanitary landfill is nearing its full capacity and may operate only within the year. He added that there is an immediate need to construct another cell of the sanitary landfill in preparation for the final closure of cell 1 once it is full.
Domatog said that the facility cannot be used once it reaches level 3 as ‘no dumping’ issuance shall be ordered, thus the plead for waste generation at source.
Report on the summary of waste disposal shows 5,639.10 tons of residual waste; 2,251 kgs.of compostable waste and 3,183 kgs. of recyclable waste were deposited at the sanitary landfill in 2024.
A monthly average of 469 tons (16.86 tons daily) of residual waste are being generated, collected and disposed of because of the many institutions and establishments that have opened up here.
According to Domatog, the city government has allocated P30M for the construction of cell 2 sanitary landfill facility. The City Engineering Office is finalizing the program design.
Apart from this cell 2, the CENRO has proposed for the purchase of thermal technology to be used in managing residual waste at the sanitary landfill.
With the volume of residual waste, the CENRO urges the public to have their biodegradable waste used as composting material and recyclable waste sold at the junkshop so that they could only dispose of residuals at their barangay material recovery facilities (MRFs).
While the city government has yet to construct for the sanitary landfill expansion, it can only call for waste segregation at the source. By Darwin S. Serion
