BAGUIO CITY – City officials recently requested the City Library Office to include the provision of various reading materials to various barangay reading centers in the city in its upcoming budget preparation for calendar year 2025.
Under Resolution NO. 373, series of 2024, local legislators stated that barangays with established reading centers are reportedly unable to finance the necessary updates due to inadequate budget allocations and limited financial resources.
Pertinent provisions of Republic Act (RA) 7160 otherwise known as the Local Government Code of 1991 provided that such basic services and facilities include for a barangay, an information and reading center.
Section 40 of Ordinance No. 53, series of 2023 also provided that there shall be a barangay reading center, in partnership with other government agencies in every barangay or at least in every district.
The council claimed that the current collection of books and other reading materials in the reading centers around the city is reportedly outdated creating an urgent need to replace them with new, updated resources to ensure that the community has access to current and relevant information.
Copies of the approved resolution will be transmitted to the City Library Office and the city’s 128 barangays for their information, guidance, ready reference and further needed action. By Dexter A. See
