BAGUIO CITY – A 22-year old labourer died after he was shot by a policeman when he attempted to enter into the later’s residence at Maridit, here, Tuesday night.
Police authorities identified the fatality as Jovanni Busilan Banes, 22, single, construction worker, while the suspect was named as PO2 Akiwa Cayda, who is currently assigned at the Baguio City Police Office Tactical Operations Center (BCPO-TOC, and both residents of Maridit, Loakan Proer, Baguio City.
Initial police investigation showed the policeman and the members of his family were sleeping in the sala of their house when he noticed that someone was trying to open their main door which prompted him to shout and ask why was he opening the door.
When he failed to receive a response, he then noticed that the window of their house was being opened that prompted him to introduce himself as a police officer but still he did not elicit any response.
The policeman then tried to peep on the window by sliding the curtain and saw that the window as already opened and he saw the suspect who then dropped a knife and attempted to grab his firearm.
During the scuffle, the firearm suddenly went off and hit the victim on his body that caused him to run away but he collapsed in front of the main gate of the policeman’s residence.
Responding police operatives and elements of the Scene of the Crime Operation (SOCO) team declared the victim dead on arrival due to a lone fatal gunshot wound on his body.
