LUNA, Apayao – The province reported a substantial decline in crime during the third quarter of 2024 of 63 per cent- a notable improvement in public safety.
According to the latest report from the Apayao Police Provincial Office (APPO) this September, the total crime incidents in the province fell sharply from 55 cases in the second quarter to just 20 in the third quarter.
Data showed serious crimes or index crimes such rape and theft, decreased by 44%. Although there were two murder cases recorded, up from one in the previous quarter, rape cases halved from four down to two. Other crimes such as physical injuries and carnapping showed a decline with no reported cases.
Non-index crimes which cover violations of special laws such as illegal drugs, gambling, and firearms possession also showed a huge decrease of 54%. There were 22 cases in the second quarter down to 10 in the third quarter. Notably, incidents related to violations of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act were cut from seven to four.
Public safety indicators also improved significantly particularly in traffic-related incidents. The province recorded only five vehicular accidents during this period compared to 24 in the second quarter. Human error such as reckless driving remained the leading cause of these accidents according to the APPO.
Moreover, the APPO attributed the decline in crime to ongoing efforts such as increased patrols, the implementation of “Oplan Katok” to address loose firearms, and intensified operations against illegal drugs and gambling. The APPO likewise emphasized the role of community partnerships in maintaining public safety, especially in rural areas where crimes are more likely to occur.
While the drop in crime is promising, the APPO acknowledges the need for continuous vigilance particularly in addressing crimes against women and children and combating illegal drugs. The APPO likewise plans to conduct more educational campaigns on crime prevention and encourage the public to report crimes and illegal activities.
Newly installed Provincial Director of APPO Police Colonel Arnold Razote hopes to build on this good momentum, expecting continued efforts in the next quarter particularly as the holiday season approaches. By Jess Christley Marquez
