In celebration of Nutrition Month, the Cordillera Young Leaders Club (CYLC) conducted an insightful webinar titled “Understanding Food Safety and Food Hygiene” on July 20.
The webinar, held under CYLC’s Adal Kordilyera series, featured Eleonor B. Ayan, MMPHA as the speaker and James Gandara as the host.
Eighty-two students, dietitians, and nutritionists attended the webinar, which provided a comprehensive overview of food safety and hygiene practices. Eleonor Ayan, President of the Nutritionist-Dietitians Association of the Philippines – Baguio-Benguet Chapter, addressed critical topics such as diseases from human waste, food hazards, bacterial food poisoning, cross-contamination, and the importance of maintaining safe premises, safe equipment and water.
Ayan also emphasized the importance of the Philippines Food Safety Act of 2013, aimed at strengthening the country’s food safety regulatory system. The act’s primary objective is to protect public health from food-borne and water-borne illnesses and prevent the consumption of unsanitary, unwholesome, misbranded, or adulterated foods.
Highlighting global standards, Ayan discussed the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Department of Health’s five keys to food safety:
- Keep clean.
- Separate raw and cooked food.
- Cook thoroughly.
- Keep food at safe temperatures.
- Use safe water and raw materials.
In her closing remarks, Ayan urged everyone to prioritize safety, report any food safety violations, adhere to food safety protocols, and respect both food and life. “The information about proper food handling, storage, and preparation is presented clearly and practically, making it easy to apply in real life,” one attendee remarked.
