LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The Department of Agriculture-Cordillera kicked off its two-day Regional Organic Agriculture Congress on August 9, 2023 at the La Trinidad Municipal Gym, La Trinidad, Benguet.
With the theme “Kabuhayang OA, Kinabukasang OK,” the Congress brings together experts, practitioners, and stakeholders in the field of organic agriculture to exchange knowledge, share experiences, and discuss strategies to further develop the organic agriculture industry in the Cordillera region. It also serves as a platform for farmers and entrepreneurs to showcase their organic products, network with potential buyers, and learn about marketing and business opportunities.
The Congress also highlights the potential of organic agriculture as a livelihood option that promotes sustainability and contributes to the economic growth of rural communities. It aims to empower farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills to transition into organic farming, and to create a supportive environment for organic agriculture.
During the event, OIC-Regional Technical Director for Research and Regulations Dr. Arlene M. Sagayo highlighted that the Cordillera region is now at par when it comes to organic agriculture. This is because of the continuing collaboration and partnership between and among the agency, the organic practitioners and the stakeholders.
“Our efforts have not only caught the eye of the agricultural community but have also ignited a spark of curiosity and enthusiasm among farmers near and far. I extend my gratitude to your dedication, your passion, and your tireless commitment which serves as the driving force behind our region’s quest to organic agriculture,” she expressed.
National Organic Agriculture Program Director Bernadette San Juan also presented the updates on the RA 11511 or the Act Amending the Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 emphasizing the roles and responsibilities of the local governments for the awareness and promotion on the adoption of organic agriculture practices in the country.
Further, National Organic Agriculture Board Representative Director Victorio Fernando Nacpil encouraged the participants not to backslide but rather to continue being an advocate of organic agriculture.
“Huwag po tayong mag backslide. Hindi tayo nagbebenta para lang kumita kundi nagbebenta tayo ng safe and nutritious food that will prevent and can even cure diseases and we should be proud of that,” he stressed.
The setting played host to a diverse array of organic produce. Products for sale included organic certified vegetables, heirloom rice, fruits, processed foods like jams and chili pastes, honey, among others.
A total amount of Php12M pesos was also awarded to six (6) OA FCAs which will be used for their livelihood projects to include trainings, production support and materials for the establishment of greenhouses.
