BAGUIO CITY – In celebration of the National Women’s Month, employees of the Department of Agriculture–Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-CAR) participated in a Basic Self-Defense Seminar on March 18, 2025, at Guisad, Baguio City.
The activity aimed to equip employees, particularly women, with essential self-defense techniques to boost their confidence, security, and personal empowerment. The initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering a society where women enjoy equal rights, power, and opportunities.
The training commenced with an informative lecture conducted by Baguio City Police Office Patrolwomen Justine Cario, Rhossy Flor Miguel, and Mary Jane Takinan, who emphasized the importance of self-defense as a fundamental right for women.
They explained the legal principles, including unlawful aggression, which requires an initial attack from the aggressor; reasonable necessity, which ensures that defensive actions are proportionate to the threat; and lack of provocation, meaning the defender must not have initiated the conflict.
Additionally, the lecture emphasized that self-defense is not just about learning techniques but also about being aware of one’s surroundings to avoid dangerous situations.
Participants were also introduced to arnis, a traditional Filipino martial art also known as kali or eskrima. The instructors explained its historical significance and practical applications in self-defense. Techniques involving rattan sticks and knives were demonstrated. Striking techniques targeted key areas, including the head, torso, arms, legs, stomach, and eyes, to effectively neutralize a potential attacker.
After the lecture, participants engaged in hands-on training, practicing escape techniques from holds, weapon disarming, and Arnis stick defense. The instructors emphasized that while self-defense skills are essential, there may be situations where confrontation is not advisable. Participants were encouraged to prioritize their safety by assessing threats, avoiding dangerous situations, and seeking help when necessary.
Aligned with the Women’s Month advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment, the seminar reinforced the message that self-defense is not just about physical skills but also a way of promoting a safer, more inclusive society for women. By Alyssa Dawn Alalag
