BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Agriculture Cordillera (DA-CAR) is preparing measures to assist Cordillera farmers affected by the recent Tropical Storm ‘Carina’.
Crisante Rosario, DA-CAR Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) focal person, explained the validation process of affected farmer beneficiaries and areas affected are currently being done to determine the interventions that the department will provide.
“We are now preparing for the rehabilitation and recovery plan for the affected farmers aside from augmenting the prepositioned buffer seeds for rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock, infrastructure, machinery and equipment, and irrigation”, Rosario said.
Based on the final damage and losses assessment report summarized by the DA-CAR DRRM Information System, 8,198 farmers have been affected by the Tropical Storm affecting 490.86 hectares of farming areas.
Production losses were recorded at 5,863.31 metric tons amounting to PhP183.4 million. Of the said amount, PhP10.4 million in damages were recorded for rice production, PhP29.7 million for corn production, and PhP133.6 million for high-value crop production.
Damage to livestock was recorded at PhP5.4 million, PhP1.8 million for infrastructure damages, PhP2.22 million for machinery and equipment, and PhP35,000 for irrigation damages. By JTLlanes
