BAGUIO CITY – The Department of Agriculture – Cordillera (DA-CAR) organizes a Children’s Educational Guided Tour on Livestock and Animal Husbandry at the Baguio Animal Breeding and Research Center (BABRC) grounds, Dontogan, Baguio City on March 20, 2025.
The 3-hour tour was facilitated by the Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS) of DA-CAR, catering 40 Dontogan Elementary School students from Grades 4 and 6, with the aim to show the animals on the farm, help the children appreciate the work and process that goes behind livestock management and maintenance and to encourage their interest in the agricultural sector.
Showcasing the production areas of various livestock (sheep and cow), agrarian activities (beekeeping), and their dairy development project, DA-CAR welcomes interested farmers who would like to inquire about their support services and venture into livestock production.
Supreme Elementary Learner Government Adviser of Dontogan Elementary School, Helen D. Vergonia, shared that aside from the aim of the tour as the student’s learning experience, it is in celebration of this year’s National Women’s Month and in observance of Girl Child Week, which is celebrated every 4th week of March under Proclamation No. 756, s. 1996.
“So, ang aim po nito is to provide young learners with valuable knowledge about agriculture and responsible animal care, as well as the significance of women in livestock and farming. We are here for the program, and nandito po kami para makita din namin kung ano yung nandito sa (dairy) farm.” Ms. Vergonia said.
Addressing women’s crucial role in agriculture, DA-BABRC Science Research Specialist I, Sir Delbert Wayet, encourages more women to venture into agriculture and farming, offering various services in the DA-CAR’s different production areas. “We often see na mga lalaki yung nagveventure ng mga livestock production, pero now, we encourage the women na mag-start rin ng kanilang mga enterprises on livestock.”
DA-RAFIS’ Children’s Educational Guided Tour on Livestock and Animal Husbandry was not just an informative opportunity for young students to learn about the processes of livestock and agriculture, but it emphasized the importance of women in the field. This event merges education and empowerment, the celebration of life, nutrition, women and children. By Agnes Dela Peña
